Expressionism
The French have been known for art and expression. Of the greatest movements that have come out France is impressionism. This is a movement that was coined by an art critic named Louis Leroy, when he first visited an exhibition of expressionist paintings in the year 1874 and saw the Impression: Soleil Levant (1872) done by Claude Monet. Painting that express emotion and with vivid colours. Of interest in this paper however, are three impressionist paintings in a comparison of the basic elements that separate them and the artists while amplifying expressionism. These include; A Bar at the Folies-Bergère of 1882 by Édouard Manet, The Dance School, 1874 by Edgar Degas and The Bath of 1892 by Mary Cassart.
A Bar at the Folies-Bergère of 1882 by Édouard Manet
The painting by Manet is the last major work that he did. It depicts a venue that was popular at the time referred to as Folies-Bergère; a music hall where people came to get the experience of unmixed joy. However, looking at the woman in the painting, she is detached pointing to the fact that she is unhappy with her work at the bar. Sources indicate that she referred to as Suzon and Manet had requested her to serve as the model for the painting. She is in a place where people come to seek happiness but she is detached and unhappy. It is painting that brings out the element of cruelty, coolness and even the glamour of what modern life offers.
