1 How does the “Crisis in Levittown” and King’s Letter from Birmingham Jail depict post-war race relations in America? Be sure to use at least two examples and parenthetical citations.
The “Crisis in Levittown” depicts post-war race relations by showing how white people want to seem like they are superior to African-Americans, even by subtle ways. In an interview about objections with integration, a woman said, “The whole trouble with this integration business is, that, in the end, it probably will end up with mixing socially, and you will have mixed marriages, and becoming equal with the whites, but the only way to do that is by educating themselves and not by pushing in the way they have here.” (Bobker & Becker, 1957). While this statement may seem to be tolerant, it shows that white supremacy was predominant, because there is fear of “mixing socially” and there is this notion that racism and white supremacy post-war is not problematic through the suggestion of education, while the issue did indeed call for more drastic actions like protests and other actions that were thought of as “pushing” or aggression. King does not agree to this type of notion for he believes that we are all interconnected and that “Never again can we afford to live with the narrow, provincial “outside agitator” idea.” (King, 1...
