The opening page of chapter 9 contains a quote from Neville Chamberlain from September 3, 1938: "Is it not positively horrible to think that the fate of hundreds of millions depends on one man and he is half mad?"
While it appears obvious that Chamberlain is referring to Hitler, is it possible that Chamberlain may be second- guessing his own actions with regard to the negotiations? Explain.

In September 1938, Adolf Hitler and Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned from a conference waving some papers which promised “peace and harmony.” A few months later, however, the country was plunged into a battle, and Chamberlain was blamed for what’s going on. He himself believed that Hitler was a mad person, who could never manage the state in his absence. According to Chamberlain, it was impossible for him to think that hundreds of thousands of people would depend on a mad person for their survival. It looks like he wanted to take all the decisions himself, without any involvement or interference of Adolf Hitler.
