I listened to the Backstory podcast episode "A More Perfect Union? The Reconstruction Era." I picked this episode because I am particularly interested in how the U.S. attempted to rebuild after the Civil War and how the challenges and decisions made during that period have shaped the nation ever since.
I had some general knowledge about the Reconstruction era before listening to the podcast. Still, I was surprised to learn about some of the lesser-known stories and details that the historians shared. For example, I wasn't aware of the level of violence and intimidation that African Americans faced as they attempted to assert their newly-granted rights or how women's rights advocates were upset that the Fourteenth Amendment did not include gender as a protected category.
