Policemen of the World
It is public knowledge that the US is the world’s superpower. However, historians differ on when the US assumed this said status and what its effects to the world have been. Many people fail to recognize that the US was once a colony and under the British rule. Britain at the time was the world’s superpower, followed by countries like France, Portugal, and even Spain. European countries had made great progress and amassed abundant wealth and therefore, saw it fit to exert their power and dominance over the rest of the world. The US was indeed one of the destinations where Europeans camped and sought to establish a colony. However, in 1776, the US decided to seek their independence from the British. While there were internal issues after country got its independence, the leaders were determined to transform the country into one of the greatest in the world. As everyone was converging and meddling in other people’s affairs, the US stayed true to their policy of isolationism. While the rest of the world was involved in the First World War, the US was creating wealth and gaining directly from the war. In 1916, the “U.S. output overtook that of the entire British empire” (Frum, 2014) and the reign of the world’s newest superpower had begun. However, this only happened after the US dropped its isolationism policy and started to have a say in the matters and affairs of the world. Recently, the country has been at the center of anything that calls for or gets to the world’s attention. Slowly, the US adopted the role of the policeman of the world and its international engagements like the US strike in Libya, Somalia, and the most interesting event when they captured Osama bin Laden confirms this role (Harry, 2013).
Discuss two international events involving the US military from the past five years that can be traced back to a foreign policy created after the Civil War.
After the US abolished the policy of isolationism, a majority of the policies it adopted were geared towards interventionism. The US had decided to get involved in other countries affairs in the spirit of looking out for the weaker variables in the world equation. The US decided to get involved and to always come to the aid of the weaker party. One of the most notable events in the past five years includes the country’s actions in Libya. Muammar Gaddafi was widely known as the de facto leader of Libya. However, Gaddafi was a known dictator who had amassed a lot of wealth for himself and his family members. The US has always been against dictators and when it found a way it could oust Gaddafi, it immediately took action. The US bombed Gaddafi’s troops and military and helped to liberate the country. While the state of Libya today is worse than even during Gaddafi’s era, the policeman of the world had done what its role calls for.
Secondly, the US military action in Syria is also another perfect example of an event that can be traced back to a foreign policy created after the Civil War. While the situation in Syria is yet to be resolved, the US military has already been involved in trying to oust President Assad. Like in Libya, the US here i...
