Causes of the 1877 strike
The events reading to 1877 began on July 14 in Martinsburg, West Virginia (Glass, 2015). Wage cuts were one of the significant factors that led to the rise of the strike. Baltimore & Ohio Railroad had cut the wages three times in a year. The striking workers made it difficult for the trains to operate until their grievances were addressed (Glass, 2015). This forced Henry Mathews, West Virginia Democratic Gov., to use the militia to restore the train's function.
According to available data, the strike achieved very little. Most politicians promised to put labour reforms in place, but no reform was introduced. Despite the great strike, industries continued to cut employees' wages.
