Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Wit, examines mortality as reality’s unifying experience, the significance of human relationships, as well as the question of what gives life meaning. The play engages audience in the experiences and illumination of Dr. Vivian Bearing, a prominent professor of 17th century poetry suffering from Stage IV ovarian cancer. It explores the scholar’s confrontation with the life-threatening disease as a prize patient in a trial chemotherapeutic treatment until her death. Wit explores Bearing’s illumination to a wholesome and more human understanding of life. Although it ruthlessly critiques the present medical research establishment that shuns meaningful personal communication, the focus is Bearing’s spiritual redemption that develops from physical pain and the loss of human dignity. Bearing lives a life of intellectualism with no meaningful human connections until she finds it impossible to avail herself of the dispassion and distance she once found in wit. She embraces humanity when she decides to die with dignity by choosing the do-not-resuscitate order. This scene sets up the play’s climactic scene since Bearing’s decision is out-of-character and demonstrates her dissociation from the intellectual armor she had been hiding behind and her acceptance of her humanity.
Piaget’s theory on cognitive development posits that intellectual growth is a direct extension of inherent biological development. The theory is founded on the belief that intelligence is supported by two biological properties characteristic of all living creatures: organization and adaptation. Organization refers to the affinity of every individual to assimilate processes into comprehensible systems while adaptation denotes the characteristic tendency of any individual to interact with his or her setting thereby developing increasingly complex mental organization. This second property consists of two complementary processes: assimilation and accommodation CITATION Hui03 \l 1033 (Huitt & Hummel, 2003). As Bearing learns about her illness and is confronted with death, she begins a courageous struggle by calling on all forces of drama and wit to defeat the enemy.
