Introduction
According to Denis O’Mahony, every year, more than $20 billion is spent in direct medical costs for the elderly. Still, a large number of old-age people complain that the care being provided to them is insufficient. Most often, they are ignored by doctors and nurses who believe that providing medical assistance and treatment to children, teenagers and youngsters are far more important than older adults. From 20 to 40 percent of old-age patients lose their lives every year due to the lack of treatment facilities and medications. In 2012, only 1.2 million nonfatal and fatal injuries existed in older adults (O’Mahony, 2017, p. 102). At that time, they used to receive timely treatment and proper medications. In 2015, the number of older patients suffering from nonfatal and fatal injuries increased up to 2.5 million. It is believed that by 2025, their number will increase up to 4 million. In this executive summary, I will describe why older patients should be provided with care, and how it will contribute to patient satisfaction and minimize hospital costs across the country (O’Mahony, 2017).
The Purpose of This Project
Doctors and nurses are responsible for providing medical assistance to all patients, without any discrimination. If it is difficult for them to serve older patients, they may divide their duties into different hours but ignoring older patients is not the solution to any problem. Certified nurse assistants must abide to spend more time with older patients than with children, teenager or youngsters inside their wards (Bloor, 2006, p. 43). They should provide them with toileting facilities, take care of their personal belongings and check their pulse and blood pressure once in an hour depending on the nature of their illness. For this purpose, a rounding sheet should be placed at the foot of every bed. It will help the staff check how many rounds a doctor made during his working hour and what type of services the nurse provided during her time in the ward (Bloor, 2006, p. 87). Besides the rounding sheet, a bulletin board should be assigned to every patient, and doctors and nurses should put their comments on it thrice a day. They may divide their duties in this regard; for example, if the doctor has a lot of patients to check, he may ask his assistant to update the bulletin board. It should reflect the overall health status of older patients. The purpose is to prevent the elderly from falling ill in the future and providing timely care to those who are in need. The hospital administrators will be encouraged to implement new policies in this regard (Bloor, 2006).
The Target Population
As already mentioned, the target population of this executive summary is older patients who complain that they receive no care within the hospital and that the behavior of doctors and nurses toward them is odd. Initially, the study will be conducted for six months, and the local government, as well as local health department representatives, will be encouraged to play their role in this regard (Pettigrew, 2006, p. 211). The aim is to increase the number of happy older patients and ur...
