Some essential organs that are not vital organs.
The eyes and the reproductive system are important organs in the body but are not vital organs.

The normal vital organs include the heart, liver, pancreas, stomach, small and large intestines, kidneys, the brain, brain stem, and lungs. The stomach, pancreas, and kidneys are considered today’s exceptions. The brain is responsible for managing voluntary thoughts, movement, bodily activities, memory, and speech. The brain stem maintains involuntary actions such as heart beating, circulation, and breathing (Cioffi, 2019b, Min 18:20). The lungs facilitate the breathing process. The heart pumps the blood and utilizes the circulatory system to ensure it flows to all body organs, while the pancreas promotes the digestion of food through pancreatic enzymes and regulating blood sugar. The liver eliminates waste products from the body. The small intestines digest the food and facilitate the absorption of the nutrients into the bloodstream, while the large intestines absorb water and salt from the undigested materials and eliminate the waste products. Finally, the stomach stores the ingested food and releases it into the small intestines, where it is broken down (Cioffi, 2019b, Min 23:48-28:31).
Is it possible to live without a vital organ? Why? Example?
Advances in medical technology and surgery have made it possible for people to live without some vital organs due to sicknesses such as cancer or an injury. For instance, when a person’s kidneys fail, they can be removed, and one survives for years with dialysis. In the case of the large intestine, one undergoes colostomies surgery to remove it, and a bag is attached to the small intestines to act as the colon. Another vital organ one can live without is the stomach (Cioffi, 2019b, Min 27:05).
The distinction between assisting or substituting vital organs. Bioethical analysis.
According to Rev. Alfred Cioffi (2016, pp. 2), assisting vital organs refers to the standard of care through surgeries, machines, or medication to provide life support critical in maintaining a patient’s life. Therefore, it is obligated bioethically, as the practice is attainable and effective in giving a patient a chance at a healthy life. On the other hand, substituting vital organs refers to the extraordinary method of supporting life through clinical procedures and surgeries to replace a failing organ. While this treatment method is helpful, it is not morally obligated as, at some point, all organs fail (Cioffi, 2016, pp. 2).
