Assessment Task 2 – Video Critique Instructions
Unit Learning Outcome (s) assessed 
This assessment task will assess your ability to apply key concepts of growth, development and ageing to a client through a video case study. This is very important for demonstrating your knowledge of the unit content, and to apply it to ‘real world’ scenarios.
This assessment task satisfies the following ULO, as outlined in the unit guide (p.5)
ULO1: Recall and describe the stages of growth, development and ageing, and the injuries or conditions that commonly present during these stages.
ULO3: Describe the effect of structural, physiological, social and cognitive changes on exercise performance and participation across the lifespan
ULO4: Categorise exercises as indicated/contraindicated for particular stages of growth, development and ageing

Description of the assessment task 
You will be provided with a video case study which will be used to answer a set of specific questions which will pertain to the learning outcomes of this unit and will assess your ability to:
*Describe the stages of growth, development and ageing, commonly present during the stage of growth. 
*Describe how exercise may influence the structural, physiological, social and cognitive changes across the stage of growth.
*Categorise exercises as indicated/contraindicated for particular stages of growth, development and ageing.
In your report, it is important that you answer the specific questions related to the video case study to demonstrate your understanding of key concepts discussed in the online content and seminars. You will need to make direct links between this information and the case client. You will also be required to source and incorporate at least 3 peer reviewed articles for each question to support this work. Although you may use the information within each weekly content and the peer reviewed articles referred to in your seminars you MUST obtain at least 3 additional relevant references per question to gain referencing credit. These references should report on findings from a study that supports a statement made in your report. 
Assessment format
The video case study and a template will be available on the Moodle resources folder nearing the due date of the assessment. 
Please adhere to the following formatting requirements when writing your case study reports: 
1. Structure your report using the sample template i.e. make sure you add all required identifying information.
2. Use headings and sub-headings as appropriate 
3. In text citations and a reference list using Deakin Harvard referencing format is required
4. All case reports must be either 11 or 12 point font in any conventional format (e.g., Times New Roman, Calibri). If you are unfamiliar with word take a look at the video link below:

5. The document must be line spacing of 1.5 throughout the document.
Weight (% total mark for unit) 
Assessment task 2 will be worth 40% of the total mark of the unit
Word Count
For assessment task 2 a maximum of 1500 words is allocated for this assignment, not including your reference list (in text citations are considered towards the word count), and questions, Being concise is an important writing skill to develop and so you will be assessed on your ability to compete the task within the word count.

Assessment task 2 will be submitted through Moodle no later than: 
Week 11: Friday 24th May 2019 
Please be aware you must submit your assessment as a word (.doc) or PDF (.pdf) file. Please do not upload a pages documents as we will not be able to open these files. 
In accordance with the University policy late submission of assessments will be subject to a reduction in the assessment overall grade of -5% for every day late. If the assessment is over 5 days late you will receive a mark of zero.

At 91 years, Mrs Virginia Rizan “Gus” is at the late adulthood stage. Due to ageing, Gus’ walking patterned had changed. She had to depend on walking sticks to move from one point to another. Ideally, the skeleton offers support and structure to the body (Tieland, Trouwborst & Clark 2018, p. 7). Bones support the body and facilitate physical movement through a system of levers and joints.
The joints are areas where the bones come together. Joints allow the bones to remain flexible for movement purposes (Emilio et al. 2014, p. 353). Joints have cartilage to cushion the bones from touching each other directly. The muscles offer strength for the body. However, due to aging and lack of exercise, Gus lost bone mass while her joints became stiffer and less flexible. Her muscles became rigid and lost tone. The cartilage became thinner as the ligaments shortened and lost flexibility, making the joints stiff. As a result, this adversely affected her movement. She had to wobble and use a walking stick. Because of the loss of muscle mass, her strength reduced. That is why Gus had to depend on others to undertake daily activities.
Cognition refers to the mental functions involved in attention, thinking, understanding and solving problems (Leisman, Moustafa & Shafir, 2016, p. 96). It is a critical aspect of an individual’s ability to participate in activities and accomplish certain goals. Cognition is also critical for allowing individuals to maintain independence. Due to ageing, the cognitive ability of Gus has declined. As a result, she is unable to operate on her own. She has to depend on family members.
Question 2: Discuss how the exercise program over the 8 months has influenced the ageing process (incorporate aspects of physiological, structural, cognitive and social) and her quality of life?
The strength exercise that Gus has done over the last 8 months has been critical for the physiological aspects of her body. Physical activity among the older adults can delay diseases, improve the functioning of vital body organs, and increase the quality of life (McPhee et al. 2016, p. 570). Because of exercise, Gus has been able to function normally, which was not possible before undertaking the strength training exercises.
Further, undertaking the strength exercise has improved Gus’ structural aspect. Such exercises make bones stronger by countering the loss of muscle mass (Hong & Kim 2018, p. 436). She is now in a position to balance herself well, something that she could not do. Her walking has become better because she is stronger and able to balance herself. As a result, Gus does not need a walking aid. She no longer uses her walker and cane after undertaking the strength exercises.
