A learning style is used to describe how people shift, gather, interpret and process information for future use. Keef (1991) describes learning style as the combination of cognitive, affective and psychological behavior that indicates how a person interacts and responds to the academic environment. Additionally, identifying one’s learning style can help someone identify their strengths and weaknesses as learning takes place.
Visual, aural, reading, writing and kinesthetic (VARK) is one of the methods that can be used to identify one’s learning style. The VARK questionnaire is based on 3 principals: First and foremost, everyone can learn academic issues. Analysts have shown that while some students cannot process the information they read, picture slides make it easier for them to stay on track. Secondly, a learner’s motivation increases when different learning styles are taken into account. Teachers should not give up when a student fails to digest the content taught a while ago. Some students need different modes of learning and lecturing simply doesn’t cut it. Thirdly, educational concepts are grasped through the utilization of senses (Dunn & Griggs, 2015). Visual preference includes the use of maps, charts, flow charts, spider diagrams, symbolic arrows, circles, hierarchies and other devices that people use in place of words. Charts and graphs are often used to present patient information. However, the presentation assumes that the healthcare workers have the literacy needed for the correct interpretation of the data. Well-designed graphs are used to present numeric information in easy ways and play an active role in healthcare by communicating the level of risk. Graphs are also used in medical journals and Electronic Health Records. Nurse’s ability to interpret graphs is important in order to facilitate well informed decisions.
Aural learners learn best by listening. They also tend to process information best whenever it is delivered orally. The following are characteristics of an aural learner. To begin with, an aural learner prefers to hear information. This type of learner often concentrates in class but rarely writes short notes with the aim of revising later (Silva, 2016). Secondly, aural learners often gravitate towards audiobooks. Although, they usually avoid any information that is presented in picture or written form, they enjoy listening to audiobooks. Thirdly, aural learners close their eyes to focus on auditory information. Students who close their eyes so as to get rid of visual stimuli are often aural. Aural workers talk and move lips to process information. They often look like they talk to themselves but they are normally reciting content they don’t want to forget.
