Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) refers to the conscientious application of the best evidence in the process of making decisions regarding the care provided to the patient. Ordinarily, EBP means incorporating one’s clinical, skills, knowledge, and expertise with the existing external clinical evidence from systematic research. It is keynoting that EBP involves the combination of several factors which include the clinical expertise, the values held by the patient and the evidence acquired through research into the decision-making process concerning a patient's care. This paper examines by Evidence-Based Practice is crucial for a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)-prepared Registered Nurse (RN), how it can be integrated improving quality care in stroke patients and the challenges encountered during integration.
Evidence-Based Practice is vital for a student pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and preparing to become a registered nurse. This is because EBP consolidates research evidence, patient preference and the clinical skills and expertise the nurse acquires throughout from practice (Belowska, Panczyk, Zarzeka & Gotlib, 2015). Traditionally, nurses based patient care on factors such as personal experience, trial and error and intuition, and reasoning. However, with Evidence-Based Practice, nursing students can close the gap between scientific evidence and experimental evidence. It equips the nurses with the knowledge to decide if the evidence is applicable for given patients. Most importantly, EBP provides the clinical expertise which enables the nurse to weigh the benefits and the risks of treatments for patients and it also takes into account each patient’s unique circumstances, diagnoses, comorbidities, and preferences. It is also important to note that the integration of knowledge and experience results in better patient’s outcomes, safer and effective care (Belowska, Panczyk, Zarzeka & Gotlib, 2015).
Stroke is among the leading causes of disability in different countries all over the world. Usually, the lack of quality care for undermines the recovery process and the patient may fail to recover fully. Evidence-based Practice may be integrated into improving the quality of care for stroke patients. There are several ways through which evidence may be integrated into treatment for stroke patients.
