Breast Cancer Screening Initiative
More than 50,000 women are estimated to be diagnosed with breast cancer where a third of them are projected to die from the disease. This is implies that breast cancer is common type of cancer and among the top causes of death in the country. Over the past three decades, the incidences of breast cancer has been on the rise showing a decrease and increase whose causes are unclear. Moreover, the mortality rate of breast cancer has been declining as well. Early detection of the condition through organized screening initiatives have demonstrated to be effective in reducing the morbidity and death associated with the condition. This proposed initiative will be conducted based on the CDC framework. It will be pluralistic in nature since there will be an interplay of various aspects of the involved groups.
Conceptual Model
I propose a trans-organ conceptual model that will be applicable to breast cancer screening. The model is organized based on the overall objectives of the cancer screening process: risk assessment, detection, diagnosis, and treatment. The model will include various types of care that will enable it achieve its objectives such as diagnosis. The model will have various steps that will arise from the type of care being employed. It will consist of three organs where the first organ will be the evaluation of risk level where age will be the specific factor of consideration as well as family history. The process will be initiated though various ways such as a request from a patient, recommendation from a healthcare provider or an institution sending an invitation. After the screening process has been initiated, the provider will choose the best method of screening based on various factors such as patient preferences, resources of the healthcare system and patient health insurance coverage. After the results are out, the best course of action is chosen. If the results are negative, other alternate screening options might be recommended. If they are positive, an action plan is designed.
Screening Purpose
The purpose of this initiative is to develop new metrics for breast cancer screening in the country. Currently the metrics are limited. Another goal of the screening is to improve the quality of health care in our country. This is in conformity to The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) 2010 that has provided various provisions for incentives aimed at improving the quality of care by developing initiatives that provide-high quality care and reduce the health care costs. The metrics of the breast cancer screening process are unclear, thus this initiative will aid in providing more clarity to the whole process.
Population
This initiative targets the postmenopausal women aged between 48 to 63 years since this is the population that is commonly affected by breast cancer. However, those who are aged between 40-47 years will also be considered because early signs of the condition occurs commonly in this age group.
