Three Barriers that have Slowed Down the Progress of APRNs
Barriers Affecting APRNs
In advanced practice nursing, nurses extend and expand the boundaries of their scope of work. They also contribute immensely to the knowledge in the nursing fraternity (The Chicago School, 2020). In addition, advanced nurses promote the development of the nursing profession. Given the enormity of their responsibilities, advanced nurses must have completed master's or doctorate degrees. It is worth noting that in the line of duty, the nurses encounter several barriers that slow down their progress. Some of the challenges that APRNs encounter include computerized charting and an emphasis on evidence-based practice (Hamric et al., 2014). In addition, APRNs are compelled to contend with a lack of full recognition by insurers and healthcare organizations.
1. Computerized Charting
Computerized charting is one of the most outstanding barriers that APRNs have to contend with in their daily routines. Due to the dynamic nature of technology, advanced nurses have no choice but to keep electronic clinical records of their patients. These records often entail the medical history of patients and the progress of their illnesses. However, computerized charting has had its downside. For instance, when nurses feel rushed, there is a likelihood of overlooking an important component which may result in false documentation (Registered Nursing Organization, 2022). Additionally, maintaining a system of computerized records is an expensive undertaking. This is because organizations have to buy software and take scores of staff through training to equip them with the skills to use the software.
The best strategy to overcome the barriers encountered in computer charting would be the invention of systems that are easy to operate. This would be important as it would minimize errors and the time used in feeding or retrieving data. In addition, impenetrable safeguards need to be introduced through Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (Clemens et al., 2017). Electronic records need to be secure owing to the sensitivity of the information they entail.
2. Evidence-based Practices
Emphasis on evidence-based practice is another challenge that APRNs encounter in their work. The procedure plays a significant role in making decisions regarding patients' care. However, many nurses find it quite burdensome and intricate. They also find it unmanageable given the considerable growth of the volume of evidence and its changing nature (Pol-Castañeda et al., 2020). In addition, the delay in the implementation of research results considerably hampers the credibility of clinical practice guidelines.
To overcome the challenges presented by the emphasis on evidence-based practice, several s...
