Therapeutic Approaches
A therapeutic approach refers to how counselors work to address the problems that their clients present to them. There are two main categories of therapeutic approaches in a broader context, the psychodynamic and behavioral approaches. This paper intends to dwell on two main types, REBT (rational emotive behavioral therapy), and the CBT (cognitive behavior therapy). The two exhibit different similarities and differences and different applications, depending on the client case.
Similarities
While most studies have been interested in establishing the differences between CBT and REBT, there are certain similarities between them, since they are believed to be related as one emerged from the other. For instance, the two support the idea that thoughts, attitudes, beliefs, and ideas are the predominant generators of behavior and emotions among human beings. These behaviors are not always a product of particular events (Matweychuk, DiGiuseppe & Gulyayeva, 2019). Also, there is a correlation in their assertion that behavioral and emotional change is achievable by changing an individual’s thinking.
Differences
There is a philosophical difference in that REBT focuses on emotional disturbance and misrepresented cognitions. This concentration has made it more prominent since it is said to the primary focus of CBT. Here, there is the correction of cognitive distortions as one tries to discard the absolutistic demands. On the other hand, REBT posits three immediate demands that give rise to the underlying emotional disturbance and cognitive distortions. First is the strong preference which one believes in determining their approval by others (David et al., 2019). Also, there is a keen desire which insists that others are not good if they treat one well. The last one highlights the passion and argues that things must go well for one; otherwise, they are of no good. The mindset is typical of creating procrastination, resentment, and depression.
