1. Briefly describe the functions of each labeled section of the skin model found in your text.Hair shaft- This part protrudes above the surface of the skin and determines the hair type, whether straight, curly, or wavy.
Epidermis- This is the outermost layer of the skin that protects against water loss. It is a barrier against pathogens, toxins and protects immune response, while it also resists mechanical stress Marieb & Smith, 2016.
Dermis- This is the leathery and thickest layer made up of dense connective tissue. The dermis provides mechanical support and nourishes the epidermis and its derivatives. It has capillaries and lymph nodes that transport nutrients into the skin Marieb & Smith, 2016.
Reticular layer- Has sensory receptors that detect touch, temperature, vibration, pressure, and pain. There are also blood vessels that assist in thermoregulation
Papilla layer- It nourishes and supports the epidermis.
Hypodermis- This is the subcutaneous layer and represents the deepest layer of the outer body layer and mostly has adipose tissue. The hypodermis is a shock absorber that also prevents heat loss from the body.
Nervous structures
Sensory nerve fiber with free nerve endings- They detect temperature, mechanical stimuli, and danger.
Lamellar corpuscle (Pacinian corpuscles)-These are sensory receptors that respond to deep pressure and high-frequency vibration.
Hair follicle receptor (root hair plexus) - They are a group of fiber endings that are sensitive mechanoreceptors for touch sensation.
Dermal papillae- Influences air formation, growth, and cycling.
