Forty to fifty percent of Americans who live to the age of 65 will have skin cancer at least once. The most common types of skin cancer in the United States are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. UV light exposure is the most important environmental risk factor for skin cancer. By limiting UV exposure you can reduce your chance of getting skin cancer. In the following assignment, you will learn how the skin protects itself against damaging UV rays and the common risk factors for skin cancer.

Layers of the Skin
Skin is the largest and perhaps among the most important organs of the body. The skin must protect the body from infections and injuries while also ensuring that the body temperature remains steady. There are three skin layers: epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue (Flynn & McCormack, 2009). The epidermis is the topmost layer of the skin. It contains melanocytes, squamous cells, and basal cells. Basal cells are located at the bottom of the epidermis. They must divide and form the squamous cells that produce keratin, a protein that adds reinforcement to the skin cells for protection from the sun (Flynn & McCormack, 2009). The basal layer also contains melanocytes that are responsible for creating melanin. Melanin is responsible for skin color and for protecting the skin from the effects of the sun. Skins with more melanin are normally darker.
The middle layer of the skin is known as the dermis. It contains elastin and collagen that are responsible for the elasticity and strength of the skin. Additionally, it contains muscle cells, sweat glands, hair follicles, lymphatic channels, nerve fibers, blood vessels, and oil or sebaceous glands (Flynn & McCormack, 2009). It is the nerve fibers that are located at the dermis that give us that sense of tough so that we would know when we are holding something or when something is touching us.
Finally, the bottom layer of the skin is made of the subcutaneous tissue. This layer is made up mostly of fat, and it contains, blood vessels, nerves, and it is the root of hair and sweat glands (Flynn & McCormack, 2009). The connective tissues within this layer enable it to house blood vessels that are larger. This enables it to regulate the body temperature.
Effects of Sun on the Skin
The sun is crucial to life for some reasons. The light and warmth that come from the sun are important to living things (Amaro-Ortiz, Yan & D'Orazio, 2014). However, too much sun can be harmful. Plants need the sun to grow. To human beings, the sun promotes the production of vitamin D which is needed to ensure that the bones remain healthy (Amaro-Ortiz, Yan & D'Orazio, 2014). Moreover, the sun helps people to counter depression. Whenever a person is depressed, basking in the sun can be helpful. However, the sun also has several harmful effects. The first is that it can cause sunburns and suntans given that these the UV rays from the sun can penetrate the skin (Amaro-Ortiz, Yan & D'Orazio, 2014).
