Critical Appraisal of Research

Essay Instructions:

Assignment: Evidence-Based Project, Part 4: Critical Appraisal of Research
Realtors rely on detailed property appraisals—conducted using appraisal tools—to assign market values to houses and other properties. These values are then presented to buyers and sellers to set prices and initiate offers.
Research appraisal is not that different. The critical appraisal process utilizes formal appraisal tools to assess the results of research to determine value to the context at hand. Evidence-based practitioners often present these findings to make the case for specific courses of action.
In this Assignment, you will use an appraisal tool to conduct a critical appraisal of published research. You will then present the results of your efforts.
To Prepare:
Reflect on the four peer-reviewed articles you selected in Module 2 and the four systematic reviews (or other filtered high- level evidence) you selected in Module 3.

Describe the design and how the study was carried out (In detail, including inclusion/exclusion criteria). The study utilized a randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach. Patients who were expected to stay in the surgical ICU for more than 48 hours were included in the trial. However, those with chlorhexidine allergies, skin irritation that prevented the use of chlorhexidine baths, high risk of bedsores as well as pregnant women were excluded. The study adopted a qualitative meta-summary approach. Studies about hand hygiene were included. Studies published before January 1, 2000, were excluded as well as those not published in English. Also, studies that did not utilize a qualitative approach were eliminated.A prospective cohort study was utilized. The patients were otherwise healthy, below two years, and were hospitalized for the first time for bronchiolitis. This was a key inclusion criterion. Lack of parental consent, missing patient data, pre-existing conditions as well as parental language barriers were some of the factors considered in excluding patients from the study.A systematic review of clinical trials on hand hygiene was utilized. Studies from developed and developing economies, empirical studies conducted in acute, primary, and non-acute care settings, studies published in English, and reported hand hygiene compliance rates were all included. Those conducted in domestic and school settings as well as those whose compliance rates were self-reported were excluded.Sample/Setting
