Introduction
The body has a mechanism to repair its cells once they are old or destroyed in any way. New cells are thus always being formed in replacement of the old ones, in a process that is articulate making sure that the cells formed are identical to the old ones physiologically and in terms of functionality. However, sometimes there are mutations in the cells genome and the process of replicating the newer cells goes wrong. As such the cells that are mutated are formed and some of them do not have the same mechanisms or function. In most of the cases, the control of the repair mechanism is lost, and the new cells may be produced at a faster rate forming tumors. While some of these cells may be harmless thus referred to as benign, others are cancerous. This means that other than altering their repair mechanisms, they affect the neighboring cells causing abnormal growth and loss of functionality of the affected cells. This spread is called metastasis. Depending on which organs have been affected, there are different forms of cancer; however, the basic aspects of mutation, growth are similar for the most parts. The symptoms associated with different forms of cancer depend on the body parts affected and the stage as well. The most common modes of treatment include radiotherapy, chemotherapy and surgery. However there are other methods namely; stem cells transplantation, hormonal therapy and biologic therapy among others under development.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis mainly involves the evaluation of the cells that have been affected by a doctor to determine if in deed there are malignant cells. This is common after the patient has undergone some screening tests to establish that they may have some lumps in certain areas of their body, such as the lungs, breasts cervix among others (Cancer.org, 2015). Diagnosis mainly involves doctors assessing a sample of cells under a microscope from the affected organs, which is called a biopsy. This process helps the doctors establish if in deed the cells found in the suspected tumors are malignant or cancerous. At the same time the process will help the doctor establish the stage of the cancer. There are a number of procedures involved in the biopsy namely; fine needle aspiration, core needle biopsy, excisional/incisional biopsy, endoscopy, laparoscopy and the open surgery exploration method.
Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy
In this method the surgeon uses a fine needle that is usually attached to a syringe. Using the needle the doctor is in a position to pull out some samples of the cells from the affected area, without having to open the skin (Cancer.org, 2015). Sometimes the needles are guided using ultrasound or other imaging technology when the tumor is difficult to reach. However, sometimes this method does not provide enough tissues to make a proper diagnosis, making it necessary to use larger needles for a more invasive cell extraction.
Core needle biopsy
