Antimicrobial agents play a crucial role in biomedical research and infection control. They are synthetic or natural substances inhibiting microbial growth, such as algae, fungi, and bacteria (Bobbarala, 2012). They include penicillin V, benzathine penicillin, procaine penicillin, and Penicillin G (Bobbarala, 2012). The paper probes four modes of how antimicrobial agents work, including antisepsis, decontamination, disinfection, and sterilization.
Methods of Operation
Antisepsis: It is a process whereby, the microbial agents inhibits or destroys microorganism in living tissue to prevent infection. A typical example is using penicillin G (C16H18N2O4S) to destroy a group of pathogens (Bobbarala, 2012). The process is effective due to the direct elimination of microorganisms.
Decontamination: It involves applying antimicrobial agents to remove contaminants such as radioactive substances and microorganisms in a specific area (Bobbarala, 2012). A good example involves using antimicrobial agents by chemical engineers in their protective equipment (PPE) in the laboratory to prevent respiratory or harmful infections.
