Introduction
The Falls Management Program is a collaborative quality improvement capability. The main goal of this program is to help nursing facilities in the provision of individual, personal care and improving their processes in fall care and results through educational and quality improvement techniques or tools. The program helps reduce the common falls among patients (Rask, Parmelee, and Taylor, Green, Brown, H., Hawley, J., & Ouslander p.460). The average age for people admitted to a nursing facility is 82.6 years.
The Falls Management Program is very important to the society because of several reasons which include;
Falls occur every day in Nursing Facilities
More than 50% of residents admitted to nursing homes have three or more admitting diagnoses. A ratio of 1:2 of this resident fall each year and about 30% to 40 % of those who fall will fall twice or even more again.
Falls bring with it some Consequences
When a resident fall, they are likely to get a fracture and this reduces their life quality and function. Most commonly patients who fall are always afraid to fall again. Falling may at times result to hip fracture. Those who are more elderly (85 years and above) are more likely to experience hip fracture than the others (60-65 years).
Falls are Threat to Nursing Facilities
Fall injuries are always a risk to job loss to most nurses and even the entire nursing institution (Ganz, Huang, Saliba, Miake-Lye, Hempel, Ganz, & Ensrud, P.392). This is a big risk as huge amounts of money are lost too. Residents at higher risk of falling should be placed at close supervision.
Almost ever Nursing Facility have some Fall Programs but Still they Understand they have a Chance to Improve
Not all falls can be prevented but it is still important for every nursing facility to monitor, intervene and asses’ ways and means to help reduce falls. The relationship between the staff and the management greatly influences how the residents are treated and how they stay. The FMP developed the ‘culture of safety’ which is there to ensure strong relationship between the staff and management. This is integrated into the organizational system. To develop this change in staff attitudes and behaviour as well as how the management is done a strong leadership is required. In addition, good communication, new policies and associative teams that will address the areas for improvement are needed. The new staff should ensure their participation in all levels of care.
