In Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher, the narrator recounts his experience in the house of Roderick Usher his childhood friend and Usher’s sister Madeline, where the narrator experiences paranormal incidents inside the gloomy mansion. The narrator states “The impetuous fury of the entering gust nearly lifted us from our feet”. This indicates that the storm around the house was peculiar and is one of the incidents where there were unusual happenings at the house. The narrator was unable to sleep and even bumped into Usher in the darkness, but he still could not understand whether what he experienced was real. The mood is dull, dark and melancholically eerie as reflected by the events of the mysterious night and description of the gloomy atmosphere inside and around the house.
During the stormy night, the narrator who was awake in the middle of the night experienced terrifying imaginations and thoughts, which reflect the ominous nature of the house. The story is set in a dreary region during the autumn, where the House of Usher is mysterious, gloomy and old. There is a relationship between the state of the house and the people who resided there, while the interior of the house in a state of decay and disturbing, and the storm represents the terrifying things that people experience. Furthermore the room and corridors are dark, the house is barely maintained and there are cracks on the walls. Roderick suffers from hypersensitivity to light, sounds, smells and taste as well as anxiety, which worsens when he believes his sister is dead.
In the gothic horror story, Poe uses a narrative style to highlight the somber and gloomy atmosphere in the house of Usher with the narrator giving details about objects and the environment. The narrator states “I knew not whence. Overpowered by an intense sentiment of horror, unaccountable yet unendurable”. Both the narrator and Roderick had already placed lady Madeline within the donjon, but the narrator begins to experience creepy occurrences that he felt uneasy and tried to be alert during the night despite being overpowered by horror. Furthermore, the story implicitly addresses tragic topics such as premature burial and the reanimation of corpses and there are allegories of death in the tale.
