A summary is not an interpretation, and an interpretation is not a summary. Summarizing the literature review and interpreting the search results are necessary for the study’s success. However, researchers must identify the distinction between the two processes to avoid confusion and ambiguity. The two have been described and compared in this paper. Furthermore, it provides information regarding the process of interpreting the search results for the PICO question formulated.
Summarizing the Literature Review
It is essential to summarize the literature review to extract the most needed and relevant data and to provide a sound synthesis for each source. It is not just about summarizing the information but about using different strategies, such as rephrasing and re-ordering the information to make it sensible (Garrard, 2020). Thus, summarizing the literature review is necessary.
Nowadays, researchers have too many sources to help find the best literature for their studies. The literature will help the researchers validate or support their present study. In addition, the literature review will provide the readers with knowledge regarding the researchers’ basis of their studies, such as experiments, theories, or other pieces of evidence. Moreover, because several databases exist, and all the information is just one click away, the amount of information available to researchers may overwhelm them. (Hashavit et al., 2021). Therefore, researchers must learn how to choose the best literature for their studies and summarize it to get the essential information. Researchers can save time, effort, and resources if they know how to choose and summarize the literature (Jensen, 2018). In conclusion, since there is vast information available, researchers must learn the skill of summarizing the literature review to obtain the needed information that will provide the best outcome for their studies.
Choosing the best literature that will meet the study’s requirements is necessary. It is also important to summarize and synthesize each piece of literature to better understand and support or oppose the study.
Interpreting Search Results
Aside from summarizing the literature review, interpreting the search results is also essential. When researchers have finished obtaining the necessary data for their studies, the next step is to analyze their search results. Therefore, researchers must conduct a proper search, summary, and synthesis of the literature to provide an accurate interpretation (Carrasco‐Labra et al., 2021).
Interpreting the search results allows the researchers to compare the results of their study with previous studies. This process will determine whether the researchers’ assumption of the study is correct. In addition, the previous studies may also provide support or contradiction to the conducted research. The interpretation of the result will also determine if the study is relevant to the time and context.
