Structural Abnormalities Seen in Patients with Schizophrenia
Schizophrenia results in changes in the brain, including the structure of specific brain systems and their functioning mechanism. The areas of the brain that are usually affected include the medial temporal lobe and the prefrontal lobe (Kochunov et al., 2017). These areas of the brain are involved in ensuring a declarative memory and a working memory, respectively—the cortex experiences bold changes in schizophrenia that are both structural and functional. The use of neuroimaging technology aids in viewing the changes. Some of the structural abnormalities observed include a decline in the volume of the gray matter and a reduction in the integrity of the white matter (Palaniyappan, 2017). These abnormalities usually progress rapidly before the onset of the disease and during the initial onset stages of the disease.
In addition to the structural abnormalities observed in the gray matter in people with schizophrenia, some changes occur in the white matter. The integrity of the white matter is disrupted.
