A human resource manager is supposed to develop and implement diverse strategies to improve the performance of the workforce. Houston Methodist in Houston, Texas, is the healthcare organization of my choice and will focus on the inpatient division that deals with patients who are admitted to the hospital to receive quality healthcare services. As the human resource director of Houston Methodist, the three diverse strategies that should be implemented, which use innovative management techniques, technology, or operational practices include the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA), Six Sigma, and the electronic health record (EHR). However, the EHR system should be innovative in a way that caregivers can use it to monitor their patients using portable electronic devices, such as tablets and laptops. The paper focuses on three diverse strategies that can be used to transform Houston Methodist’s workforce performance for the better.
PDSA is a quality improvement strategy and can be utilized to improve workforce performance in the inpatient division at Houston Methodist. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement has encouraged healthcare organizations to use this method due to its unique features of cyclical nature of effecting and assessing changes via small and frequent PDSAs (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2020). The three primary questions that this strategy strives to answer are the following:
What is the primary objective or goal?
How should it be known when the goal has been achieved?
What would be done to meet the goal?
The PDSA begins by identifying the problem scope, changes that should be done, what to measure to know the impact of change, and who need to be included to make positive changes (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 2020). As a result, Houston Methodist can use this method to determine factors that hinder effective workforce performance and implement relevant changes to overcome them entirely.
Six Sigma is the other most appropriate strategy that Houston Methodist can use to improve its workforce performance. In particular, the method was initially designed to be used in businesses, but numerous healthcare organizations have used it and succeeded in fostering their workforce performance. Six Sigma entails improving, designing, and monitoring various processes to eliminate or minimize waste while increasing financial stability and optimizing satisfaction (Hughes, 2008). One of the primary problems affecting healthcare organizations, Houston Methodist being one of them, is resource overutilization. In particular, overutilization leads to wastage of resources that would be used to help more patients. Six Sigma enables clinicians to use the available resources, such as medicines and equipment, effectively and optimally. As such, Houston Methodist's workforce will meet its patients’ needs, make work easy, and enhance job satisfaction for physicians since they have everything they need to perform their duties appropriately.
