Manage Care against Fee for Services Medical System
The American health care system is one that has experienced massive changes in the last several decades. All of the changes that have been effected have been in light of making sure that the health care system is streamlined. This is relative to offering the patients the best of health care services, in terms of quality and cost. Of the many health care system programs that have been designed in the past, there two main ones that have dominated the health care system for quite some time ("Managed Care Plans vs. the Fee-for-Service (FFS) System", 2016). Managed care and fee for service programs are the most common health care programs in the American health care system. They have had massive impact in the health care delivered to the patients across the states. However, they are based on very different models and philosophies which sets them apart.
The fee for service is the rather older system and can be referred to as the traditional system of health care provision. It is now being slowly replaced by the managed care systems across most of the states and in various medical care outlets. In the fee for service program, the medical professional got paid for the services that they offered ("Managed Care Plans vs. the Fee-for-Service (FFS) System", 2016). This meant that there was not a limit to their treatment decisions as professional could offer as many services as they felt professionally possible ("Fee-for-Service | Medicaid.gov", 2016). The backdrop of this system was largely based on the profits that the medical professional could manage bring in at the end of the day. The medical professional set the price for their services and also set the number of services that they were willing to offer relative to their ability and resources available (Nesvisky, 2016). On the other hand, the patients largely never got the best quality services and the cost health care was never regulated. As such, in this system, the patients did not have much benefits to match with the cost of health care under the program (Alam, 2013). In most of the cases the patients would have to pay the deductible amount over and above what the insurance companies were willing to cover. The system was never patient centered, rather it was profit centered. Rarely did the medical professional consider the patient in their plans. Largely, the motivation behind the profession had simply been turned into business oriented service, where the only element that mattered, was how much the doctors and other medical professionals were making.
In the managed care system is rather different from that of the fee for service relative to the fact that, the former is patient based. Having been introduced after the fee for service program, the managed care system is rather refined and geared towards making the health care services streamlined (Barnes, 2012).
