Suicide is one of the most extreme effects of the covid-19 outbreak, and there is an increased risk of worsening mental health outcomes associated with suicidal ideation. Coronavirus (Covid-19) has increased social isolation, fear of contagion, stress, anxiety, financial anguish, and even poorly resolved grief, and these problems are undermining mental health (Killgore et al., 2020). There is a close relationship between depression, suicide, and psychological problems. Most people who commit suicide seem to be depressed, and those diagnosed with depression are at high risk of suicidal thoughts than those without. By 24th February 2021, there were 81,525 cases in King, county, Washington where 5,090 had been hospitalized and 1,365 had died from covid-19 illness (King County, 2021a). Seattle is the county seat of King County and as the most populous city in the city it has been one of the most affected. Suicidal thoughts are considered all those thoughts that an individual has regarding intentional and planned suicide.
There are inadequate mental health facilities and yet these are required essential to meet the needs of those affected and those vulnerable. Typically, when suicidal ideation is detected, the risk must be assessed to determine the most effective and appropriate intervention. There is no single cause of suicide but are various diverse sociological, psychiatric, and psychological perspectives that can explain suicidal thoughts and suicidal ideation. Suicidal thoughts mostly occur during times of intense emotional pain and suffering and when individuals are vulnerable such as with the covid-19 pandemic (Gunnell et al., 2020). Public health initiatives on suicide prevention also focus on availing care services to the most vulnerable.
Improving service and expanding the available programs is an important aspect of reducing the risk of mental health deterioration.
