Helpers or recovery workers are professionals, family, or relatives who care for patients. Spending time as a helper can be exhaustive and lead to burnout. Among helpers such as nurses, burnout is a significant problem among American nurses who leave or consider leaving their jobs (Shah, Gandrakota, & Cimiotti, 2021). The significant causes of burnout include sleep depreciation, working in a high-stress environment, little or no support, and emotional strain from patient care. As argued by Corey and Corey (2021, p. 371), helpers must be vigilant for burnout signs and engage in self-care to avoid eventually becoming impaired for the job.
There are several ways through which helpers can practice self-care. The most straightforward and most accessible include making sleep part of the self-care routine and making a point to exercise every day. As already mentioned, sleep deprivation is among the significant causes of burnout.
