Program Outcome 1: Providing Safe, High Quality, Patient-Centered Care Grounded in Holistic Health Principles
Psychiatric nurses have a responsibility to provide holistic care, which considers more than just the patient’s mental health. They should also consider the patient's physical, spiritual, and social health. Understanding a patient’s cultural and spiritual beliefs helps nurses develop therapeutic relationships with patients (Foster et al., 2021). Learning in this course helped me apply this knowledge in my practice. For instance, during my interactions with patients, I made sure to ask patients about their religious, spiritual, or cultural beliefs to have a sense of their belief system. This approach gave me an insight into how the patient is as a whole so that I could provide care beyond their mental health needs. In another example, this course facilitated the development of my spiritual care competencies. According to Shamsi et al. (2022), spiritual care is integral to holistic care that should be integrated into psychiatric healthcare. I was open to the spiritual preferences and references of a client with anxiety who considered their spirituality central to their mental well-being. I referred the patient to a chaplain to receive the spiritual support I knew they needed but could not get from me.
AACN Essentials: Foster Caring Relationships
This course equipped me with knowledge and an understanding of the value of a therapeutic alliance between healthcare providers and mental health patients. I learned that effective mental healthcare delivery depends on therapeutic relationships (Foster et al., 2021).
