Public health informatics uses science and technology to promote health and prevent diseases in communities (McGonigle, 2015). Within the public health realm, it can be further broken down from federal, state, and local public health agencies that all work hand in hand in using technology to develop standards that improve healthcare. The role of local public health agencies in informatics is to collect data and information from the specific population it is supporting within the agency's specific geographic location. The local health department collects statistics in areas such as: birth and death records, immunization information, and different cases of diseases (Ex: sexually transmitted illnesses, lack of health care insurance, and communicable diseases). From there, the local agency would share their data with their state health department which would analyze all the data from all the local health departments to see if there are any trends in health, as well as analyze resources they have available to support the healthcare issues within their state (McGonigle, 2015). The state would then release their information to a federal agency, a major one being the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The CDC has developed integrated information systems to collect and analyze different data topics. One example of these systems is The National Electronic Disease Surveillance Base System (NBS), which serves the local and state health departments to manage and send out disease data trends (CDC, 2016). Where the local and state departments provide statistics of healthcare information, the federal agency collects, studies, stores, and analyzes this information to develop standards of care for all the nation to follow (McGonigle, 2015). Informatics in the local, state, and federal public health agencies plays a pivotal role in healthcare because it provides timely access to critical information through the world wide web and this information is a resource to
healthcare professionals to use in making important medical decisions.
