Robert Wood Johnson, an education advocate, had an exceptional interest in hospitals. He noticed that hospital management needed special training to enable the administrators in the healthcare advance their management skills (NASEM, 2016). To achieve this fate, he started a school that could help give such training, worked with AARP and IOM among other institutions. He also advocated for patients who seemed lost in the healthcare jumble. In that case, this paper explores the progress made after the IOM report and provides the explanation and suggestions on the skills for the practice, education, and leadership that is essential improving the profession.
RWJF and the AARP
AARP, a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization, formed a joint initiative with RWJF to improve the future of nursing. The initiative led to the formation of Campaign for Action. It is assisting in implement the IOM’s evidence-based recommendations that would improve regarding the future of nursing. The Center to Champion Nursing in America (CCNA), which is an initiative of AARP, RWJF, and the AARP Foundation, is the coordinating entity for Campaign for Action (RWJF, n.d.). It also serves as the office of the national program for the Future of Nursing State Implementation Program. AARP also helps people realize their dreams, makes the communities stronger and fights for families in matters of healthcare, job security as well as retirement planning. AARP offers lifestyle tips, education and news information, produces AARP Magazine which is the world's most circulating magazine, books, and AARP Bulletin, and a bilingual news source, The AARP VIVA. It also operates , TV & a Radio station. All these activities help in promoting the Future of Nursing Campaign for Action and the State-Based Action Coalitions.
The RWJF Initiative and the IOM Report
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) teamed up with the Institute of Medicine (IOM) to launch a key initiative for the future of the nursing occupation. A committee was established to examine the capacity of the nursing personnel to meet the demands of a transformed public health and health care system. Bold nationwide recommendations were developed addressing nursing service delivery in a shortage setting and the capability of the nursing system of education and a Campaign for Action program initiated. ‘This program is designed to spur progress by supporting Action Coalitions, most of which are led by volunteers, that are doing promising work to implement the IOM recommendations,’ (RWJF, n.d.). Besides that, they established a clear agenda, as well as a blueprint action that included the policies of the institutions at the local, state and national levels (Melnyk et al., 2012). The recommendations, in the report, addressed various changes in the system that could solve challenges such as nursing personnel shortage in the United States.
