How can America continue to have millions of its citizens under 65 years uninsured despite priding itself as a developed country with some of the best healthcare insurance like the Affordable Care Act (ACA)? According to the Congressional Budget Office, 23.6 million individuals under 65 will be uninsured in 2031. A large number of uninsured Americans will deny people access to healthcare services. The inability of the government to provide access to healthcare services will disadvantage low-income individuals who cannot afford expensive healthcare services. ACA aimed to ensure that more individuals have insurance coverage in America. It also endeavored to improve the quality of care in the country. However, ACA has not met its objectives, as demonstrated by the millions of Americans who are not covered. The solution to the problem can be addressed by replacing ACA with a single-payer plan. This is because ACA leaves millions of Americans uninsured, it is ineffective because of the complex administrative requirements, and shifting to a single-payer plan would cover more people and cost the government less since it will reduce administrative requirements.
While ACA has substantially minimized uninsured citizens, improved access to care, and lowered uncompensated care for hospitals, it has been unable to cater to millions of uninsured Americans. The Congressional Budget Office (2021) projects that between 31 and 32 are uninsured despite the implementation of ACA. Additionally, more individuals are underinsured or face constraints limiting choice and disrupting longstanding therapeutic relationships under ACA (Longest, 2016). Healthcare professionals deal with the increasing requirements for documentation in a space dominated by giant hospitals, with insurers taking advantage of the plan and providing very narrow networks, leaving out the best healthcare professionals and healthcare facilities. ACA has increased complexity in the healthcare system, especially because of the administrative requirements and deprived patients of the right to effective healthcare.
There is a need to replace ACA with a single-payer plan to avoid some of these negative implications on patients and healthcare providers. Single-payer options refer to healthcare financing arrangements that seek to form financing mechanisms aimed to attain universal coverage, which can be achieved by consolidating the existing multiplayer system into a single system. For instance, states can combine federal funds from Medicare, Medicaid, and ACA and have the system mostly or wholly financed by one entity, especially a government agency. A single-payer system would replace health insurance companies and payments from patients and become like a “Medicare for all” people. Currently, Medicare uses a single-payer system but only for older adults and those with disabilities.
