Similarities and differences between Essentials and Competencies in nursing
Most of the elements that form the nursing essentials are similar to those that develop nursing competency. These same elements range from the use of patient-care technology to maintaining high-quality standards of care to embracing leadership in line of duty, among other components (Anderson & Anderson, 2012). However, there is one significant difference between the two variables as nursing competency embraces independence form of competence while the essential element of nursing advocates for inter-professional collaboration.
Most Surprising Competency
The most surprising competency is the independent practice competency that nurses are required to have. This is surprising to me in that it provides the nurse with some authority though limited to independently manage previously diagnosed or undiagnosed patients (Gardner, Chang & Duffield, 2007). This means that the nurse assumes some limited powers of not only screening diagnostic strategies but also prescribes medication within the scope of practicing nursing.
