There is a wide difference between quantitative and qualitative research studies. However, most students do not recognize the difference between these two types of studies and often end up getting confused by the two. The major difference between quantitative and qualitative research is in the methodology that is used to analyze the data as well as in the nature of collecting the data.
A good example of a qualitative research is an article ( HYPERLINK "/pmc/articles/PMC1379645/" /pmc/articles/PMC1379645/) written by Soo Carusone, Mark Loeb, and Lynne Lohfeld (2006) that was published in the BMC Geriatrics Journal. The article that addresses pneumonia care and the nursing home has various attributes that make it a qualitative study. The first thing that makes this article a qualitative research is the manner in which the researcher collects data. The main method of data collection in the article is through observing the behavior of the families involved in the study.
The other thing that makes the study qualitative in nature is that it is random. Instead of selecting a certain sample population, the researcher involves every patient with pneumonia as long as they are able to remember certain aspects about their disease. The study also included interviews with certain individuals something that is characteristic of qualitative studies. Instead of having any specific measures as far as data is concerned, the study is interpretive and only focuses on what the research believes to be the correct approach.
