Nursing theories entail knowledge-based and well-organized concepts that usually define the nursing practice. They are procedures that provide proper frameworks that shape nursing care. Examples of nursing theories are Casey’s nursing model, self-care deficit theory, environmental theory, cultural care theory, tidal model, and patient-centered approach. The paper focuses on the importance of applying nursing theories to patient care and reflects on how these concepts contribute to the planning and provision of quality patient care.
The primary purpose of applying nursing theories is to promote patient care. In particular, they offer the foundational knowledge required by caregivers to ensure that they are taking the right actions and procedures when taking care of their patients. For example, nurses should know how to handle their patients with respect and integrity, organize nursing responsibilities, and how interact with their patients’ families. Notably, a nursing theory-guided practice significantly improves the quality of patient care since caregivers understand how to handle different situations, sick individuals, and their families (Younas & Quennell, 2019). Moreover, nursing theories fall under distinctive categories. For instance, the emphasis of the environmental theory is to improve a patient’s surroundings, including fresh air, cleanliness, and light exposure, to ensure that it’s appropriate for recovery.
Nursing theories are meaningful to the current practice. They organize the nursing scope to help nurses identify their purpose and responsibilities at work so that they can handle their patients well and satisfy their medical needs. Nursing theories ensure that caregivers understand the resources they require to provide quality patient care (Waller & Wicks, 2021). In other words, they foster professional nursing decision-making since caregivers have to adhere to specific protocols when taking care of their patients.
