Purnell Model for Population Sub-Group: Latino
The Purnell Model presents a foundation for understanding the numerous attributes of a certain culture. In nursing, the model makes it possible to figure out a patient’s attributes, such as experiences, incitement and perceptions about disease and healthcare. It is made up of 12 domains that are quite important when it comes to evaluating the characteristics and trait of various ethnic communities. This essay looks at Purnell Model for the Latino population sub-group and recommendations for culturally competent nursing care based on the model.
Heritage
Latinos are an ethnic group living in the United States but with cultural ties to Latin America. Foreign-born Latinos are more likely to be less educated, earn less income, have more mobility problems, and have less access to sources of livelihood than those born in the US. When compared to other races, Latinos have the least amount of time spent on education. The main professional roles that members of this group hold are skilled blue collar and unskilled labor positions (Sarkar, Asti, Nacion & Chisolm, 2016).
Communication

There is a perception that ‘it is in everyone’s interests’ that older adults live with their children and grandchildren. Latino women are more likely to get married at a younger age than whites.
Workforce Issues
The immigration status of a Latino job seeker may be called into question by the employer. Hispanic employees may be taken advantage of by employers if they fail to present the right papers. This includes little pay and poor working conditions. About 32 percent of Latinos do not have health insurance.
High Risk Behaviors
Latinos have the highest obesity prevalence rate for males aged 20 years and below. The rate of preventable hospitalizations is higher among this group when compared to non-Hispanic whites. Probable reasons for this include a mistrust of the healthcare system. The group continues to face an uneven burden of HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Latinos are more likely to be harassed by law enforcement officers and imprisoned than whites. Lung cancer caused by smoking is the top cause of cancer deaths among Latinos (López-Cevallos & Harvey, 2019).
Nutrition
A typical Hispanic diet is usually high in fresh meats, vegetables, fish, fruits, rice, beans, corn and spices.
Pregnancy
Some Latinos believe that being pregnant is a natural condition and one that does not ...
