It is crucial for healthcare practitioners to understand the steps used in problem-solving to workplaces because understanding the steps will enable them to provide adequate solutions. As a result, the profession designed a five-step problem-solving process, which allows healthcare professionals to approach problems in a systematized fashion. This paper defines all the steps of the five-step problem-solving process and provides details of how the process can be utilized in the workplace.
Identifying the problem, which requires paying attention, observation, and confronting difficult issues is the first step of the process. It follows that problem solvers must look past the obvious using questions to identify the real situation adequately. The process is applicable to my workplace in a case involving John whose performance was rated poorly by his manager. John immediately thinks the rating was because his manager disliked him. After talking to the manager, John realizes that he is a poor communicator who needs to improve on communication skills.
The second step of the process is to collect information or assessment. It is notable that problem solvers should not collect information based on opinions and assumptions because they could lead to poor decisions. This process could be achieved by reviewing the problem, collecting objective and subjective data on the problem, conducting research, and asking for help where necessary. After talking to workmates, John realizes that he speaks to non-healthcare hospital staff and clients as though they were medical practitioners.
