Prevention Quality Indicators
A famous quote says that prevention is better than to cure. Prevention quality indicators, PQIs play the generous role of ensuring that situations are prevented before they get worse. Prevention quality indicators, PQIs consist of measures that are used together with discharge data of inpatients from hospitals aiming at identifying ambulatory care sensitive conditions, ACSCs among the adult population. Ambulatory care sensitive conditions ensure that comprehensive outpatient care does not end in the patients being hospitalized and ensure early medical intervention to prevent the situation before it gets worse (Padula et al. 2015).
PQIs use data obtained from hospital inpatients, but the results are inclusive enough to represent the quality of healthcare in settings outside the hospital environment. A good example is a patient who may be suffering from diabetes. The patient can end up being treated with complications from diabetes if proper care is not taken or monitored or even when the patients are not given education on how to take care of and manage themselves. Additionally, if healthcare practitioners fail to follow the provided guidelines, patients may end up hospitalized from ulcers or even asthma (Padula et al. 2015). These hospitalizations can easily be avoided by following PQIs. PQIs have a fundamental role that it plays in ensuring improved quality, safety, and outcomes of patients as well as their families.
Assessment of the quality of the healthcare system is done wholly by the PQIs to prevent clinical complications. The evaluation is taken based on the population of inpatients against successfully executed cases. It is the major quantifier of quality in the healthcare sector. Through PQI, the quality of services is gauged. This is achieved by taking admission data from different hospitals in areas that prior research indicates that they have been neglected. The unmet needs of the community will give a clear indicator of the hospitalized cases that do not need any hospitalization. Additionally, it helps in monitoring cases of complications from different common situations are being avoided in the scenarios of outpatient. All these are very crucial in ensuring that the quality of the health care services provided is of good quality. PQI measures, therefore, show the extent of preventive care and its timeliness of chronic diseases and ordinary acute conditions.
