The Pressure to Conform to Certain Norms

Do you agree or disagree with the social constructionist perspective that a body is a blank screen onto which societies project their ideas about gender?
Why or why not?
What evidence might you use to argue for your point of view?
Post: definitely feel like I believe in the social constructionist theory that our bodies are born as a relatively clean slate, and that the gender norms we tend to associate with are projected onto us through society. I don't want to be misunderstood into saying we all have to adhere to what is presented. Boys and girls, males and females feel varying pressures, whether from their parents, or from their friends that encourage them to meet certain levels of “normal” for their individual gender. I do not feel as though infants are born with these ideologies and then grow into these instincts. I feel I can see this very easily in my young children. My son Conner is five years old, currently a student in Georgia Pre-K. I feel like my husband and I, encourage him to do activities he enjoys, and play with what he likes, as opposed to simply limiting him to typically gender specific toys for boys like GI-Joe's, trucks, super heroes, all these things I feel are pushed into the hands of boys encouraging them to stick to their own physical genders. In his classroom, almost every day when I come to pick him up, he's playing with Barbie's in the dollhouse or pretend playing in the kitchen baking a cake or using the pretend housekeeping supplies. He doesn't feel any pressure, at least on a family forefront, to only play with gender specific toys. I have heard him talk about being teased from other little boys in the classroom saying he plays with “girl toys.” Whereas, I think Conner just sees them all as toys. Sometimes he'll play with this, sometime he'll play with that. In a tiny way, he's rejecting the encouragement of his peers to adhere to traditional gender norms. I'm not sure he would feel so strongly, if we didn't encourage him to make his own choices.
