Patient's Spiritual Needs
The patient's spiritual needs are significant in medical examination and treatment. Spiritual needs are specific requirements whose satisfaction leads to spiritual growth. The paper addresses the patient's spiritual needs by answering different questions associated with James, an eight old boy.
Decision Making (Physician and Mike)
Mike should not make decisions that seem to be irrational that jeopardize the general health of his son. The case study indicates that making such decisions puts James' life at risk. Indeed God heals according to the Christian overview; however, some critical situations require a comprehensive analysis. The case shows that James suffers from acute glomerulonephritis and kidney failure. Kidney failure is a complex condition that requires a high-quality intervention and immediate analysis. Therefore, deciding to take James to a healing service is inappropriate before an immediate analysis is initiated. Mike believes James should be taken to the healing service, which may not favor his current health condition.
Additionally, James' condition requires quality and ethical decision-making. According to Timmins & Caldeira (2017), every individual has an intrinsic desire for belonging, purpose, transcendence, and meaning through quality decisions. Ethical decision-making is fundamental in health and spiritual care since it sustains trust and considers specific values. Ethical decision-making is necessary to avoid uncertainties and to compete for societal and spiritual values. For instance, Mike's decision affects the patient's autonomy and does not consider the health outcomes. The principle of autonomy gives the patients the right to make valid and ethical decisions (Evans, 2020). The autonomy principle inhibits the external forces from coercing decisions. Therefore, since James is a minor, Mike should make a decision that considers his interest in allowing for immediate dialysis instead of taking him for faith healing service. Taking James to church disrespect the patient's autonomy. Therefore, the physician should not allow Mike to make such decisions since it is unethical and does not consider patient autonomy.
Christian Thinking on Health and Sickness
Christians view sickness and health uniquely. Christians view health as a virtue that inhibits people from suffering. Besides, God is the initiator of healthy life to show love to his people (Koteneva, 2020). According to Christians, the patients should not suffer so long as they strongly believe and work according to God's commandments. Christians also note that a sickness is a form of punishment, and every individual should learn to suffer without losing hope. The Christians are also responsible for working hand in hand with the medical health professionals to ensure high-quality healthcare delivery. Besides, Christians live a holy life to limit such punishments, including sickness. Therefore, Christians have a unique view of health and sickness, which are critical in decision making.
