In this assignment, you will be writing a 1,000-1,250-word essay describing the differing approaches of nursing leaders and managers to issues in practice. To complete this assignment, do the following: Select an issue from the following list: nursing shortage and nurse turn-over, nurse staffing ratios, unit closures and restructuring, use of contract employees (i.e., registry and travel nurses), continuous quality improvement and patient satisfaction, and magnet designation. Compare and contrast how you would expect nursing leaders and managers to approach your selected issue. Support your rationale by using the theories, principles, skills, and roles of the leader versus manager described in your readings. Identify the approach that best fits your personal and professional philosophy of nursing and explain why the approach is suited to your personal leadership style. Use at least two references other than your text and those provided in the course. I do not know how to download a format that will guide in this easay writing. Sample Grand Canyon University: Typing Template for APA Papers: A Sample of Proper Formatting for the APA 6th Edition This is an electronic template for papers written in APA style (American Psychological Association, 2010). The purpose of the template is to help the student set the margins and spacing. Margins are set at 1 inch for top, bottom, left, and right. The type is left-justified only—that means the left margin is straight, but the right margin is ragged. Each paragraph is indented five spaces. It is best to use the tab key to indent. The line spacing is double throughout the paper, even on the reference page. One space is used after punctuation at the end of sentences. The font style used in this template is Times New Roman and the font size is 12. First Heading The heading above would be used if you want to have your paper divided into sections based on content. This is the first level of heading, and it is centered and bolded with each word of four letters or more capitalized. The heading should be a short descriptor of the section. Note that not all papers will have headings or subheadings in them. First Subheading The subheading above would be used if there are several sections within the topic labeled in a heading. The subheading is flush left and bolded, with each word of four letters or more capitalized. Second Subheading APA dictates that you should avoid having only one subsection heading and subsection within a section. In other words, use at least two subheadings under a main heading, or do not use any at all. When you are ready to write, and after having read these instructions completely, you can delete these directions and start typing. The formatting should stay the same. However, one item that you will have to change is the page header, which is placed at the top of each page along with the page number. The words included in the page header should be reflective of the title of your paper, so that if the pages are intermixed with other papers they will be identifiable. When using Word 2003, double click on the words in the page header. This should enable you to edit the words. You should not have to edit the page numbers. In addition to spacing, APA style includes a special way of citing resource articles. See the APA manual for specifics regarding in-text citations. The APA manual also discusses the desired tone of writing, grammar, punctuation, formatting for numbers, and a variety of other important topics. Although the APA style rules are used in this template, the purpose of the template is only to demonstrate spacing and the general parts of the paper. The student will need to refer to the APA manual for other format directions. GCU has prepared an APA Style Guide available in the Student Writing Center for additional help in correctly formatting according to APA style. The reference list should appear at the end of a paper (see the next page). It provides the information necessary for a reader to locate and retrieve any source you cite in the body of the paper. Each source you cite in the paper must appear in your reference list; likewise, each entry in the reference list must be cited in your text. Nursing shortage is a statein which the demand for nursing professionals surpasses the supply either globally, nationally or within a health care facility. Nurse-to-patient ratio, nurse-to-population ratio or when some job openings necessitate a higher number of nurses than present available can be used to measure and determine a nurse shortage. Nurse shortage is a situation that is being experienced in both developed and developing nations globally. Nurse turnover is a situation where nurses leave the nursing professional for other professions or just quitting nursing. There is a broad range of reasons why nurse turnover has increased globally in modern day world. Evidently nurse turnover is one of the reasons for nurse shortage but it is not the only cause, there are other grounds for the situation. Nursing leaders and managers are supposed to approach such issues such as nurse shortage and nurse turnover and find working solutions.
Leadership and Management
Leadership is a process whereby an individual influences others to achieve a shared goal while directing the organization in a direction that makes it more cohesive and coherent. Management is the organization and coordination of business activities with the aim of achieving certain targets. A manager's job is planning, organizing and coordinating while a leaders' job is to inspire and motivate. Managers deal mostly with structures and systems while a leader concentrates mostly on people. There is a difference between the two ideologies even though they are supposed to go hand in hand and are complimentary. Unlike management, leadership can not be taught. Issues in organizations like nurse shortage and nurse turnover can be addressed through use of theories, principles, skills and roles of the leader vs. manager (Juraschek, et.al 2012)
Principles
Being technically proficient is one of the principles that a leader must comply to help them approach nurse shortage and nurse turnover. Being technically proficient involves a leader knowing and understanding his job well. Nurses who are working under the leader will feel obligated to read and understand their job requirements and duties if their leader knows his responsibilities too. This can be a way of leading by example and a show of commitment from the leader. Technical proficiency also involves a leader having a solid familiarity with their employees' tasks. This will help a leader do follow up and can even get involved by helping them out when necessary or when a nurse is not present. This will motivate the nurses and give them a boost in their morale. The boost in confidence and motivation may help reduce cases of nurse turnover (Oulton, 2006).
Seeking responsibility and taking responsibility for one's actions is another principle necessary in approaching such a situation as nurse shortage and nurse turnover. In the search of taking the organization to greater heights, critical decision making and risks are involved.
