The nursing profession is characteristic of increased use of advanced technology innovations for enhanced interdisciplinary integration in managing and communicating information, data, knowledge, and wisdom pertaining to nursing practice. These innovations take different forms within the nursing practice as witnessed in the current teaching practices in nursing or education, research, and administrative roles in the profession. These examples reflect an integration of the outlined elements in nursing practice, which coupled with the increased use of health information technology constitute a unique discipline in nursing referred to as Nursing informatics (NI). The genesis of the field of nursing informatics can be traced back to the 1960s with remarkable innovations that transformed and continue to create positive outcomes in nursing practice CITATION Bra12 \l 1033 (Branchini, 2012). Organizations such as the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) function to record and maintain the accounts of innovations and innovators in the field including some of the pioneers in nursing informatics. Among the nursing informatics pioneers include Dr. Patricia Abbott and Judy Murphy renowned for their unique influences in the field.
