Risk management has been an integral element of our local health organization in the quest to mitigate against infectious diseases and more so in the face of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, risk management in United States' hospitals has been prevalent since the mid-'70s (Singh & Ghatala, 2012). In this health institution, the head nurse is tasked with ensuring that the outpatient settings achieve the utmost risk management levels possible. The head nurse was interviewed, with the objective being to offer an insight into risk management in the premise.
According to the head nurse, operations at the facility have changed significantly since the beginning of the year 2020. The first official confirmation of the virus in the United States (U.S.) in February (Baker, 2020) compelled her to emphasize the actions undertaken in the organization to mitigate against the spread of infectious diseases. To this end, handwashing has received the greatest spotlight in the institution as an effective strategy of minimizing the spread of infectious diseases. Sanitizers, washing detergents, and water tanks have been placed at various spots where individuals can cleanse their hands as often as possible. People are advised to wash their hands well, hand rubbing them and using the serviettes provided in these locations to dry, and finally, throwing them away.
Healthcare professionals have become stricter in following this routine, considering that their exposure impacts the wider sick population. Another strategy has been to use personal protective equipment (PPE) frequently in hospital environments to curb the spread of the virus and other diseases among patients and health care workers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) (2020) has provided health care professionals with precise guidelines on wearing and removing PPE gear. Also, patients are given face masks when they enter and leave the organization. Finally, proper disposal of waste has been articulated to ensure optimal protection for everyone.
The community's health care organization regards various education programs as crucial to sustained risk management efforts and, more importantly, in addressing various professional, legal, and ethical issues, including but not limited to vicarious liability, malpractice litigation, and prevention of negligence. In this regard, the institution is keen on reminding its workers of the essence of maintaining their professional code of conduct not from a sense of obligation or rather as a necessity to ensure flawless operations around the organization. In so doing, they guarantee a harmonious working environment resulting from everyone working at the facility. Further, it limits the number of confrontations and conflicts arising, considering that the appropriate channels will resolve such disagreements. On a positive note, there is enhanced efficiency in communication resulting in improved and quality patient outcomes. Health care workers have made relentless efforts to abide by their code of conduct, meaning that there have been minimal possible litigation scenarios. Disagreements with patients have been solved amicably. This ...
