Nurse as an Educator
Nurses are most commonly associated with patient care and treatment in clinics and hospitals. However, there are more roles, such as a researcher, counselor, etc., that a nurse can function as. Educating other people, especially about healthcare and medicine, is already a common practice in the nursing profession as this is also a part of patient care. However, besides teaching in this setting, nurses can also be nurse educators handling students who aspire and train to become future community nurses. This paper aims to discuss the role of a nurse as an educator, including the requirements, expectations, and various organizations involved in this field.
Educational Requirements and Specialized Training
The minimum educational requirements to become a teacher/educator are a completed nursing education program inclusive of both practical and theoretical units and a license as a registered nurse. In addition, these nurses undergo advanced education to be a part of future nurses’ academic and clinical journey. Most universities require nurse educators to have a doctorate to be able to teach in their facility. For further studies, an education degree or a post master’s training and certification may be taken for specialization in a specific field in healthcare and nursing. The years of clinical experience is also a factor that is considered. A minimum of two years as a full-time clinical nurse in the last five years is required (Anpd.org., 2021).
