CLAS and Nursing Practice
Nursing is a sensitive profession that needs extra carefulness because it saves human lives by stabilizing their health. The National Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services Standards (CLAS) help to guide the nursing practice. My peers and I use these standards to guide our daily routine in dealing with patients and other healthcare stakeholders. We acknowledge the diverse cultures and their healthcare beliefs when handling patients from various backgrounds. This makes us provide nursing services according to their beliefs (Minority Health, n.d). For example, some cultures do not permit their members to expose their hair. In this case, I have to respect the belief when treating them and not ask the patients to expose their hair. The standards also need us, nurses, to offer language services to the patients we receive in healthcare facilities.
