List the title and author of the article you chose.

The title of the article is “Napping on the Night Shift: A Two-Hospital Implementation Project” by Jeanne Geiger-Brown, Knar Sagherian, Shijun Zhu, Margaret Ann Wieroniey, Lori Blair, Joan Warren, Pamela S. Hinds, and Rose Szeles.

Describe the purpose of the study.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the barriers to effective execution of night-shift naps and to relate the rest experiences of night-shift nurses who took short periods of sleep.

What is the research question in the study?

The research question in the study is: What are the barriers to effective implementation of night-shift naps and what are the experiences of night nurses who take short periods of sleep in relation to work performance and safety?

What is the hypothesis of the study?

The study hypothesizes that addressing nurse leaders’ views on napping may be critical to successful implementation of napping on the night shift. It also theorizes that napping improves drowsiness and sleep-related performance challenges among nurses who work night shifts.

One Example

Identify whether the study design is experimental or observational. Support your identification with examples from the study.

The study is observational because it sought to document the barriers to napping among night-shift nurses as well as aspects of the scheduled naps among night-shift nurses without trying to change who participated in the study and who did not.

The study did not assign nurses to any groups and the same intervention was applied to all nurse units that participated in the study.

Identify the methods used to collect the data and explain why the methods are appropriate based on the research question.

The methods used to collect data were self-administered questionnaires and interviews. The two data collection tools were appropriate because they allowed the collection of actionable numerical data as well as non-numerical data, including the concepts, experiences, and opinions of nurses.

The self-administered questionnaires included the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale and an investigator-developed four-point ordinal scale to measure levels of sleepiness and perceived helpfulness of the night-shift naps. Interviews with nurse managers and staff nurses were conducted to access their experiences and perceptions of napping.
