Mental health refers to one's emotional, social, and psychological well-being and affects how one feels, thinks, and acts (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2021). On the other hand, a mental illness is a diagnosed condition that affects one’s actions and thoughts. Examples of mental illnesses include bipolar disorder and depression. As informed by CDC (2021), a person may have poor mental health but not a mental illness.
Stigma refers to the shaming and devaluing of an individual based on attributes or characteristics they possess and can contribute to negative experiences such as discrimination and rejection (Subu et al., 2021).
