The role of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid relates to the APRN or nursing practice in various ways. Medicare is a program by the federal government which provides medical coverage for people over 65 years or those with disabilities (Lee et al., 2019). Medicaid is a program they give health coverage to persons from a low-income household. A registered nurse is paid by entities like Medicaid and Medicare based on physician reimbursement rates. The rate of nurse reimbursement for the two entities varies across states. The list values of the Medicaid-to-Medicare Fee Index also vary across physicians and nurse practitioners.
The roles of these centers relate to nursing practice in that these entities are in line with the affordable care for patients. These entities are in support of a more patient-centered health care plan. Therefore, it demands that healthcare professionals align with the shifting focus of the healthcare system from specialty and acute care. In the recent past, several factors have contributed to the change in the healthcare system. There has been a consistent rise in the aging population in need of palliative and long-term care (Figueroa et al., 2018). There has been an increase in the insured population with the increase in ethnic and racial minority groups who traditionally have faced challenges while accessing medical care. Hence, the registered nurse training and education ought to align with these emerging issues.
