Introduction
Nursing and medicine, in general, are not the normal professions where one works for eight hours and then leaves for home. This is more like a calling, where one can be called upon at any time to attend to an emergency medical case. The expected allocation of patients per practitioner is supposed to be two. However, this number is usually more than triples due to the dynamics of reality. The movie Wit by Nichols is a story of how an intellectual by the name of Vivian Bearing comes to the knowledge that she had an advanced stage 4 cancer of the ovary. The movie breaks down how she went from a professor to a normal human being in the course of the medication since she was now just a patient. The film is about medical care and the processes that happen during the management of terminal illness, as well as the meaning of life.
Analysis
The movie shows a universal constant ideal of being a patient as Vivian Bearing is susceptible and has lost control of her health conditions. This movie, starring Emma Thompson, shows how patients get to experience these more. I can see the other side of the healthcare profession, which depicts heinous ignorance of medical humanities, common behavior between the intellects, and the conducive manner of looking after a patient by a nurse despite not being an intellect. Mike Nichols developed this movie from the story of an intellect professor Vivian Bearing suffering from stage four ovarian cancer, her treatment, and how the professor perceived her personal and professional status by being a patient.
The movie starts with a conversation between Dr. Kelekian telling the professor that she had metastatic ovarian cancer and her treatment would be a vigorous course of chemotherapy for approximately two months. Earlier in the conversation, Dr. Kelekian referred to the patient as intellect as she answered, "Like yourself." The doctor aimed to show that academia and research could be sometimes costly, which could involve death. In the movie, patients weaken when being sick, which comes in the conversation between Bearing and the X-ray technician and former Bearing's student. The student felt ashamed when asked to look after her as he seemed awkward and amateurish. Her former student rushed through the interview and exam and reacted as if the professor was a scientific experiment displaying a less emotional response to the patient's displeasure.
