Introduction
Nursing theories are used to develop, describe, disseminate and use current knowledge in practice. Among many other nursing theories, Dorothea Orem Self-care deficit theory is particularly interesting because of the assertions she made in her philosophy regarding the nursing profession. Orem held that each individual was responsible for his or her health and that of his or her dependants. Additionally, they had the capability to perform self-care and therefore, the nurses would only step in to ease human limitation. This paper presents that major influences of Orem's theory and the way her perceptions have shaped the nursing practice and curriculum today.
Self-Care Deficit theory overview and major influences
Dorothea identified her view on nursing practice based on action theory. She asserted that an individual is a deliberate agent or the actor that desire to care for themselves. The purpose of this model was to define the nursing concern based on the human need for self-care and the provision of management that would continue to sustain health and life and recover from injury or disease (Parker & Smith, 2010).
